Gary Cialdella has been photographing since he was a teenager. His interest in vernacular landscapes and architectural subjects began at an early age. Gary attended Western Michigan University where he studied history and received both bachelors and masters degrees. While in school he developed an interest in the history of architecture and was then able to utilize his photography skills to document historic structures. These early documentary photography projects lead to other related work and to his further study of fine art photography. Gary has studied with photographers Frank Gholke and Mark Klett.

Simultaneously to his creative photography concerns Gary taught photography at colleges and universities, including Kalamazoo Valley Community College, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (he headed the photography program there from 1977 to 1985) at Western Michigan University and the University of Notre Dame. In addition he has taught workshops at numerous institutions, including the Center for Creative Studies, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

In 1986 Gary returned to school to earn his MFA in Photography from the University of Notre Dame. For his black and white photographs of rural and urban vernacular subjects he received grants from the Michigan Council for the Humanities and the Michigan Council for the Arts. His photographs were included in the Art Institute of Chicago's An Open Land: Photographs of the Midwest 1852 - 1982. His recent photographs of the industrial landscape of south Chicago and northwest Indiana, as well images from rural Mississippi are represented in the Museum of Contemporary Photography's Midwest Photographers Project Archive.

In his personal photographs Gary works in primarily in black and white using medium and large format cameras. He is co-owner with Susan Carr of Carr Cialdella Photography an assignment based studio specializing in architectural photography. Gary also teaches photography and exhibits his work widely.
